What Is Team LEAD?

Team Lead Hands

Team LEAD is a bystander leadership program for schools and communities based on student empowerment and broad-based education of staff and students.  A key component of the program involves student bystander leadership groups formatted as extra-curricular clubs which meet, preferably, during the school day.  Team LEAD promotes Leadership, Empathy, Accountability and open Discussion.

Middle schools are an ideal setting for the Team LEAD approach.  The discussion group/forum format is enticing to young teems, and the leadership skills promoted prepare students for high school and beyond.  In addition, the Team LEAD program provides the foundation which naturally extends into both formal and informal peer mentoring within the middle school itself or between middle school and elementary students.

Question asked:  "I believe I can make a difference at school."

Format:  Anonymous Self-Report Survey of 345 6th and 7th Graders

Question Asked, October 2007:  66% said YES!

After 5 months of mentoring and bystander leadership programming. . .

Same Question Asked, March 2008:  77.5% said YES!

An 11.5% Increase in Five Months

Yes!  We can create positive climate change!

 

Why Promote the Bystander Leadership Approach?

The majority of bullying occurs in the presence of other students; rarely are teachers present, and rarely do they even find out what has happened.

When students have ownership of the program, it means more to them; they take it more seriously, and it empowers them to be more positive leaders.

If bystanders ignore the bullying, the bullying simply continues, according to a 2006 Australian schools study by Rigby and Johnson. 

Rigby and Johnson (2006) found a significant correlation between tendency to intervene and expectations of friends; those who felt that their friends expected them to step in and support a target were much more likely to do so. (2006)
